Colleagues:
The UW System Board of Regents held their monthly meeting in Green Bay last week, with many of the key presentations focusing on UW-Green Bay, which hosted the meeting. Of particular interest is the campus' "growth agenda," described below.
1. UW-Green Bay unveils growth agenda
UW-Green Bay Chancellor Bruce Shepard on Thursday, April 6, unveiled "Northeastern Wisconsin's Growth Agenda," a plan to increase UW-Green Bay's state-supported enrollment by 50%. This effort is consistent with UW System President Kevin Reilly's vision for growth throughout the UW System.
Chancellor Shepard said the plan would result in a headcount enrollment of approximately 7,500 students, requiring an additional $8.2 million in state support over the next six years. The Green Bay campus currently serves approximately 5,400 students.
In addition to covering the costs of educating additional students, additional state dollars would allow the campus to finish constructing facilities currently under development, as well as another classroom and office building. Three factors are driving this growth agenda: increased diversity in the region's population, the economic transition of Northeastern Wisconsin; and greater demand for access to the university.
Asked if he intended to request a reallocation of internal UW System funding to support the plan, Chancellor Shepard said that such an approach is "not realistic." Rather, he suggested that friends of all UW institutions should work together to gain legislative and community support for the whole UW System.

3. Assistant Vice Chancellor Pat Takemoto to retire
Along with many other changes here in Madison, UW-Extension will soon bid farewell to Pat Takemoto, who has served as assistant vice chancellor since 2003. Her two decades with the University have included work at UW Learning Innovations, Wisconsin Public Television and Radio, UW-Madison and UW System Administration. Most recently, Pat has made many important contributions to institution-wide fundraising, cross-divisional grants, service learning and other initiatives. After retiring on July 3, Pat plans to re-locate to the reliably temperate climate of Hawaii, where her family resides. We look forward to the occasional shipment of macadamia nuts and Kona coffee!
4. Interim Provost Ellen Fitzsimmons to retire
Ellen Fitzsimmons, retired associate dean of Cooperative Extension, deserves my heartfelt praise for her work as UW-Extension's interim provost and vice chancellor since October 2004. Next Thursday, April 20, will be her last day in the office. For everyone in the Lake Street building, the absence of her lilting soprano voice will conspicuous. More important, her extensive institutional knowledge, keen insight and good humor will be sorely missed.
5. Dean Michael Brophy accepts president post in California
Michael Brophy, dean and CEO of UW-Baraboo/Sauk County, announced yesterday that he has accepted a position as President of Marymount College in Palos Verdes, California. Having served as dean since 2002, Michael has led many important efforts at the campus, including the construction of a new $5-million Living and Learning Center, and a collaborative pilot project with Wisconsin Public Television to deliver college courses via "datacasting."
6. Closing thoughts as interim chancellor
As I prepare to return to my position as UW-Extension's provost and vice chancellor, I am grateful for the collegial support and cooperation I received as your interim chancellor. It's been a great privilege, and an educational experience, to serve in this capacity. I learned much about the UW Colleges their mission, organizational culture and business processes. At the same time, I learned to see UW-Extension in new ways, and I am increasingly confident that the future holds great promise for both institutions.
I came to this realization with the help and support of many trusted colleagues. In addition to Ellen Fitzsimmons, whose service as interim provost is noted above, I want to acknowledge the leadership provided by Margaret Cleek, provost and vice chancellor at UW Colleges. Margaret has been a great source of assistance and counsel, and a strong advocate for the UW Colleges during this integration process. I look forward to our continued collaboration as provosts.
Many others too many to enumerate deserve my sincere gratitude for their help during my tenure as interim chancellor. Thank you, everyone, for your hard work and positive spirit.
