WAUSAU - Two University of Wisconsin Marathon County faculty members have received national honors for their efforts to help students across Wisconsin succeed at college-level reading and writing.

At UWMC and beyond, Joanne Baird Giordano and Holly Hassel have been on a mission to give under-prepared students a better transition into college. Many students arrive at two-year colleges without the skills needed to excel at writing. Some arrive without ever having written an essay, Baird Giordano said.

Baird Giordano is a UW Colleges developmental reading and writing coordinator who splits her time between teaching and administration, and Hassel is an English professor at UWMC. Their current work is informed by about a decade of research into how to support their students.
