People
As a recipient of the Hessen-Wisconsin Writing Fellowship, Deborah Bernhardt, lecturer, English, UW-Baraboo/Sauk County, was Visiting Writer for the Hessischer Literaturrat, Wiesbaden, Germany, August through October 2007.
Kenneth R. Bradbury, hydrogeologist at the UW-Extension Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey, was selected for a U.S. Department of State Fulbright Senior Specialists project in South Africa at the University of the Western Cape. During November 2007, Bradbury presented professional development courses in groundwater protection in fractured rocks and assisted African scientists with studies of the interactions of groundwater and surface water.
Michael Crane is the new associate director and chief operating officer for Wisconsin Public Radio, a service of the UW-Extension and Educational Communications Board. Crane, who began his appointment on Jan. 1, 2008, will be WPR's operating head and second-in-command, leading the 45-member programming staff of WPR's statewide networks and its national programming service. He will be responsible for the overall sound of WPR.
Sheryl Gasser has been named director of talk programming for Wisconsin Public Radio. She had been assistant director of talk programming since 2004. Gasser will be responsible for the selection, scheduling, production, editorial content and quality control of WPR's statewide call-in programs.
Cherie Hatlem, registrar, UW Colleges, is chair of the Small Colleges Issues Committee of the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admission Officers. She was elected vice chair of the Community Colleges Committee at AACRAO's December Leadership Meeting in Washington, D.C.
Marcie Manthe, program assistant advanced confidential, was named the 2007 recipient of the UW-Marshfield/Wood County Classified Employee Award, based on her outstanding contribution to the overall campus environment.
Barry Roberts, education program manager, UW-Madison Small Business Development Center, has been honored as the Wisconsin 2007 SBDC State Star. The award recognizes Roberts for making a significant contribution to the UW-Madison SBDC and showing strong commitment to small businesses in Columbia, Dane and Sauk counties.
The Arthur M. Kaplan Fellows, named annually, are faculty and staff who make significant and innovative improvements in instruction and service to UW Colleges students. The award bears the name of a former UW Colleges vice chancellor who was deeply committed to quality instruction and service for students.

Campuses, divisions and units
The UW-Extension Division of Continuing Education, Outreach and E-Learning (CEOEL) has received the 2007 Institutional Service Award from the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning. The division received the award for the ways it helps students access educational resources and engage in lifelong learning. CEOEL was cited for its leadership of the Adult Student Initiative, which encourages adult learners to return to college and complete their degree.
The Extension Conference Centers has received Travel Green Wisconsin certification. The three UW-Extension conference centers—The J.F. Friedrick Center, The Lowell Center and The Pyle Center—are located on the UW-Madison campus. Travel Green Wisconsin is a voluntary program that reviews, certifies and recognizes tourism businesses that have made a commitment to reduce their environmental impact.
Wisconsin BookwormsTM, a partnership of the Wisconsin Association for Home and Community Education, UW-Extension Family Living Programs and Wisconsin Public Television, is celebrating 10 years of bringing the joy of reading to children. The program provides eight free books per year to children who otherwise might not be able to own them.
