Kudos

Recent statewide, regional and national professional appointments and honors received by UW Colleges and UW-Extension employees, campuses, units and divisions.

People

Nolan "Whiz" Beck, associate dean for academic and student affairs, UW-Marathon County, is the recipient of the UW Colleges Nora McGuire Outstanding Academic Staff Member in Student Services. Beck was recognized for his long-term contributions to the campus and support of the student services staff and the students of UW-Marathon.

Mary Crave, program development and evaluation specialist, Division of Continuing Education, Outreach and E-Learning, was a speaker at the U.S. Agency for International Development's African Education Workshop in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in April. She participated in a panel discussion on Increasing Access to Learning for the Hardest to Reach. Crave is the principal investigator for a U.S. Department of Agriculture teacher-training project in Congo and Rwanda.

Norlene Emerson, assistant professor, geology and geography, UW-Richland, is the recipient of the UW Colleges Outstanding External Contributor in Student Services Award. Emerson supports students through academic advising, involvement in faculty-led student research, and participation in Student Services programs and events.

Lori Galetka, associate lecturer, physical education, UW-Marshfield/Wood County, has been named the UW Colleges 2008 Women's Basketball Coach of the Year.

Mary S. Grant, associate dean, Division of Continuing Education, Outreach and E-Learning, UW-Extension, has received a national service award from the University Continuing Education Association (UCEA). Grant was honored with the Walton S. Bittner Service Citation for her outstanding service to continuing education and UCEA.

Mary Hoeft, professor, world languages (French), communications and theatre arts, UW-Barron County, has been named a 2008 Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad Program recipient to Morocco. Hoeft will research attitudes of children throughout Morocco toward the role of Moroccan women.

Carolyn Diane Johnson and Mathias Wehrli are each a recipient of a UW-Extension Academic Staff Council Award. The awards recognize academic staff members' excellence and outstanding service to the university community and beyond. Johnson, the assistant director for the Milwaukee County Extension Office, Cooperative Extension, is UW-Extension's nominee for the 2008 Academic Staff Regents Award for Excellence (individual category). Wehrli is a graphic designer for the Division of Continuing Education, Outreach and E-Learning.

Student Services professionals at UW-Fond du Lac are the recipients of the UW Colleges Outstanding Team in Student Services Award. Melissa Luedtke, LeSuong Cina, Maggie Gellings and Robyn French, with the leadership from Jackie Morgan, were honored for their exceptional teamwork and providing exceptional service and support to students and colleagues.

Patty Marotz, operations program associate, Central Office of Student Services, Madison, is the recipient of the UW Colleges Outstanding Classified Staff Member to Student Services Award. Marotz provides logistical support for the meetings, WisLines, teleconferences and other communications activities that connect the 13 UW Colleges campuses. She is also the lead person for various national and state scholarships, data reporting and other tasks.

An educational video produced for the UW System Women and Science Program by Frances Perkins, assistant professor, communications and theatre arts, UW-Fond du Lac, and Troy Perkins, assistant professor, communication/radio-TV-film, UW-Oshkosh, has won three national awards. "Encouraging a Bright Future for Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math" is the recipient of the WorldFest Houston Gold Remi Award for Best Educational Video, Aurora Gold Award for Sciences/Instructions, and AEGIS Video & Film Production Award in the training/education category. "Brothers," a short dramatic film by the duo, won a special jury award at the Wildwood Film Festival in April and was featured at the Wisconsin Film Festival.

Diane Pillard, campus executive officer and dean, UW-Rock County, was honored with a 2008 Woman of Distinction Award from the YWCA Rock County on April 4, 2008. These prestigious awards are presented to women of Rock County who have distinguished themselves through personal achievement and leadership.

Kerry Trask, professor, history, UW-Manitowoc, has been named a 2008 Fellow of the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters. Fellows are named for their qualities of judgment, perceptiveness and knowledge of how literature, art and science contribute to the cultural life and welfare of the state. Trask and six additional fellows will be formally inducted and celebrated in a ceremony Nov. 2, 2008, in Madison.

Campuses, divisions and units

The UW Colleges English Department's Assessment Program was awarded honorable mention in the 2008 Diana Hacker TYCA Awards for Outstanding Programs in English for Two-Year Colleges and Teachers by the Two-Year College English Association of the National Council of Teachers of English. Cassandra Phillips and Greg Ahrenhoerster, associate professors, English, UW-Waukesha, are the department's assessment coordinators.

The UW Higher Education Location Program (UW HELP) is the recipient of a 2008 Gold Award in the publications category from the University Continuing Education Association (UCEA). UW HELP received the award for the 2008 Introduction to the UW System, an annual publication targeted to prospective students, their parents and families.

The UW-Extension Academic Staff Council has honored the Wisconsin Nutrition Education Program of Cooperative Extension's Family Living Program with an Award of Excellence. The program, which is recognized as a national leader for its high-quality educational programs, is UW-Extension's nominee for the 2008 Academic Staff Regents Award for Excellence (program category). Beverly Phillips is the state WNEP coordinator.

Wisconsin Public Television has won a regional Edward R. Murrow Award in the documentary category for "War Story: An In Wisconsin Special." The 30-minute program was produced by Frederica Freyberg, edited by Butch Soetenga, and shot by Soetenga, Mike Eicher and Wendy Woodard. Brad Wray, Kerman Eckes and Tom Naunas recorded the sound; Daniel Abel provided after effects. This is the third Murrow Award received by WPT.

The 15th annual Garden Expo, presented Feb. 8 -10 by Wisconsin Public Television and UW-Extension/Cooperative Extension Horticulture Team, attracted 16,400 garden enthusiasts to the Alliant Energy Center in Madison. More than 200 community volunteers assisted with the event.
