I switched schools for the 2015-16 academic year and was confronted with the task of making science real and relevant for my energetic urban middle schoolers in Milwaukee. Enter Dr. Justin Hougham and the fantastic Upham Woods staff. With support from Justin and his staff, my students have participated in one (soon to be two) extended day outdoor education experiences at the Upham Woods Outdoor Learning Center. And on a more practical level, using the Digital Observation Technology Skills (DOTS) kit, my students are exposed to exploring the world using the lens of technology which offers them another way to view the world and ask questions which many of them would be otherwise unable to do. These digital observation kits have allowed my students to become real data collectors, explorers of the world, and scientists in ways that I could not have imagined. Many thanks Justin and team!
