Recall or Replace a Mail Message

These actions only work with messages
There are two options when working with a mail message that you have already sent, but want to take back, that is, Recall and Replace.
Begin in the Mail Folder. The Mail Folder button is at the bottom of the Navigation Pane.
Click on Sent Items. The link to Sent Items appears in both the Favorites Folder (by default) and All Mail Folders.
Find the message you want to recall or replace. Open that message.
Next click on the Actions menu.
To Recall a message, select Recall This Message...

The Recall This Message dialog box appears. If the person has not yet read the message, including having it come into Outlook and sit in their Reading Pane, and be not have been marked as read, you can either Delete unread copies or Delete unread copies and replace with a new message. The check box, "Tell me if recall succeeds or fails for each recipient will generate a lot of email if you sent the message to a large number of people. Also, you will get that response only after the individual opens Outlook.

Successful recall of a message will show as follows in the sender's Inbox:
![]()
Message recall failure will show as follows in the sender's Inbox:
![]()
To Replace the message, open the sent item, click on Actions and Recall ..... In the dialog box click on the "Delete unread copies and replace with a new message. You will be prompted to write the new message. Once it is sent again, if the Replace is successful, when the recipient tries to open the message that is a "recall attempt" (in Red), the recall message and original message (both in Red) will both disappear and only the replacement message (in Blue) will be there.

The messages about success or failure will still come back to the sender, so you know if your resend successfully deleted the original message.
Resending a Mail Message
In some cases it is necessary to Resend a message.
Begin in the Mail Folder. Click on Sent Items. Find the message you want to resend. Open that message.
Next click on the Actions menu.
To Recall a message, select Resend This Message...
A new copy of the message will open. If you plan to resend the message to the same recipients, click on Send. You can also change the recipients, and edit the message if necessary before sending.
