Opening Word Attachments from Outlook

This week's Computing Tip is about changing a setting in MS Word so attachments that are Word documents open in the preferred view .

Remember, if you have ideas for the Computing Tip of the Week, please send them to Pat Fellows.

Introduction

The migration from various email programs to Microsoft Outlook for UW Extension employees has also included the installation of Microsoft Office. Many staff are reporting a problem that attached Word documents are opening in Word in Reading Layout View. This tip will provide users with a fix to this problem.

The Problem

When an email is received with a Word document attached and the user double-clicks on the attachment, it opens in Word in Reading Layout View. Here is a screen shot of what that looks like.

Word Reading Layout View

For many users, this view is not the view they work in.

The Solution

To change the setting in Word that will open Word documents in either Print Layout View or Normal view, please follow these steps:

  1. Open Word
  2. Click on the Tools pull-down menu
  3. Select Options from the Tools menu

    Word Tools Menu

  4. This will open the Options dialog box
  5. Click on the General tab
  6. On the General tab, there is an option in the upper right corner, "Allow starting in Reading Layout"

    Word Options Dialog box

  7. Uncheck this option
  8. Click on OK

Once this is done, Word attachments in Outlook will open in Normal or Print Layout View.
