Office 2007 - Understanding the new user interface
This year we are migrating many staff and faculty within UW Colleges and UW-Extension to Microsoft Office 2007. The migration schedule is being planned right now for those affected by this change. Madison based staff who are ready to move to Office 2007 now can go to: http://uwex.uwc.edu/it/forms/service/ to submit a Service Request to have the Central IT Service Center load Office 2007 on your machine. The migration plan will be forthcoming.
With staff and faculty already migrating to Office 2007, it is a good time to provide users with a document that introduces the new user interface, commonly referred to as the "Ribbon." As users become more familiar with Office 2007, this document will serve as a great reference to fall back on when a tool or task is nowhere to be found. Print the document, keep it handy, and refer to it often. What's new in Office 2007? - Understanding the new user interface.
There is also a great video demo on the Microsoft Office Online site. Check it out. It takes about 15 minutes to go through the video, but it is well worth it. User Interface Video.
There is a team of staff here in Information Technology Services who are working on development of a web site with links to quality online materials which will support users during their move to Office 2007. As soon as this site is ready, users will receive the link by email. Watch for the link in the next week or so.
We are also developing online training modules in Desire2Learn for users interested in step by step exercises to learn how to perform basic tasks in Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Word.
Finally, the Computing Tip of the Week will provide users with quick tips on using Office 2007. These "Tips" will be emailed most Fridays, just as this one was. They will also be archived at http://www.uwex.uwc.edu/outlook/tips/.
Remember, if you have ideas for the Computing Tip of the Week, please send them to Pat Fellows.
